I Feel Like I've Lost My Sense of Direction

I Don't Know Who I Am Anymore

August 12, 20262 min read

It's one of the most painful things a woman can say.

“I don't know who I am anymore.”

What's interesting is that she usually doesn't say it because something terrible has happened.

She says it after years of doing exactly what she believed she was supposed to do.

She built the career.

Raised the children.

Supported the family.

Showed up.

Performed.

Solved problems.

Took care of everyone who needed her.

And somewhere along the way...

she disappeared.

Not all at once.

Little by little.

One compromise at a time.

One responsibility at a time.

One expectation at a time.

Until one day she looks in the mirror and realizes she's become incredibly good at managing her life—but no longer feels connected to herself.

She often believes this means she's having a crisis.

I don't.

I believe she's having an awakening.

Because you cannot reconnect with yourself until you first realize you've become disconnected.

That awareness, painful as it may be, is not the end of the story.

It's the beginning of a different one.

The goal isn't to go back and find the woman you used to be.

She no longer exists.

You've lived too much.

Learned too much.

Changed too much.

The invitation is to discover the woman you're becoming.

That begins with giving yourself permission to become curious again.

What matters to me now?

What have I outgrown?

What have I been carrying simply because I've always carried it?

What would feel true if I stopped living everyone else's expectations?

These aren't easy questions.

But they are honest ones.

And honest questions have a way of leading us home.

If you've found yourself saying, “I don't know who I am anymore,” don't assume you've lost yourself forever.

Perhaps you've simply reached the place where you're finally ready to meet yourself again.
