Successful woman reflecting with confidence on the progress and growth of her life journey.

Look at How Far You've Come

September 16, 20262 min read

High achievers are usually very good at looking ahead.

What's next?

What still needs to be done?

What goal haven't I reached yet?

That forward focus can take us a long way.

But it can also keep us from noticing something important.

How far we've already come.

Think about the woman you were ten years ago.

Or twenty.

Think about what she worried about.

What she didn't yet know.

What she was afraid she couldn't handle.

Think about the things you've survived since then.

The decisions you've made.

The skills you've developed.

The boundaries you've learned to set—or are finally learning to set.

The people you've loved.

The losses you've carried.

The times life required you to become someone you had never needed to be before.

All of those experiences have become part of you.

They have shaped what you believe, how you respond, what you notice, what you tolerate, what you value, and what you now know about yourself.

Some of that internal shaping may still need examination. Growth doesn't make every lesson we learned along the way useful forever.

But much of it is evidence.

Evidence that you adapted.

Evidence that you learned.

Evidence that you kept becoming.

We don't always recognize our own growth because we experience it from the inside.

The courageous decision that once terrified you eventually becomes something you simply know how to do.

The situation you once thought would break you becomes part of your history.

The woman you worked so hard to become starts feeling ordinary because you wake up as her every morning.

She isn't ordinary.

She's familiar.

There is a difference.

You don't have to live in the past.

But every now and then, turn around and look at the road behind you.

Not to measure your worth by what you've accomplished.

But to remember what your life has already taught you about who you are.

Then take that woman with you into whatever comes next.
