When was the last time you did something simply because it brought you joy?
Not because it was productive.
Not because someone needed you.
Not because it advanced a goal.
Not even because it was good for you.
Simply because you enjoyed it.
For women who have spent years building careers, raising families, solving problems, leading organizations, and carrying responsibility, that can be a surprisingly difficult question.
We become accustomed to organizing life around what needs to be done.
And there's nothing wrong with responsibility.
It creates stability.
It helps us care for the people and things that matter.
It has probably played an important role in the woman you've become.
But responsibility can become so deeply woven into identity that pleasure begins to require justification.
We choose the walk because it's exercise.
We read because we should learn something.
We travel because there is an event to attend.
Even our leisure can become another form of productivity.
Somewhere along the way, joy gets scheduled for later.
After the deadline.
After the children are settled.
After the business is stable.
After everyone else is okay.
But joy is not frivolous.
It is information.
It tells us something about what makes us feel alive, connected, curious, peaceful, playful, or fully present.
And sometimes the things that bring us joy reconnect us with parts of ourselves that responsibility pushed quietly into the background.
The woman who loved music.
The woman who laughed easily.
The woman who painted, danced, gardened, traveled, sat on the porch, wandered through bookstores, or spent an afternoon doing absolutely nothing useful.
She may still be there.
You don't have to reorganize your entire life around pleasure.
But you can begin noticing what lights something up inside you.
And then, instead of treating those moments as extras, you can give some of them a place in your life.
The life you're creating doesn't have to be built only around what matters.
It can also make room for what delights you.
Joy belongs there too.
